Texas Hot Flash

"[Texas] Hot Flash - a must see
It's not surprising that these three women sing tight harmonies with an ease on stage - it speaks to their performance skill. The surprise comes with the quality of the harmonies, which range from echos of Celtic dirge to jazz sevenths and ninths. Their repertoire excites audiences, moving through singer-songwriter originals to brand new arrangements of old chart toppers. Hot Flash's melodies will echo in your head long after their last ringing note is gone from the stage." - Kate Hayward

We certainly appreciate your appearance once again on KEOS and I, among many, love your harmony. You folks have a great blend of voices, and I think personalities as well!
John Roths, Program Director, KEOS, College Station, TX

Thanks so much for being on the show this morning. Please pass on my thanks to Amy and Karene'. You guys sounded great.
Joe Angel, DJ, KEOS Radio, College Station

It has unfortunately been too long since having contact with you and Texas Hot Flash. I'm glad this email was opened yesterday because today I was driving to Huntsville, thru College Station, and happened to be in College Station when you were performing. The performance, as per usual, was great! The gospel tune is definitely my favorite!

We have heard very little about Mr. Jimmy's Coffee Shop. Is it still in existence? Hot Flash, even though the performance was short, was one of the best performances Jimmy ever booked.

You ladies are very talented and I am still your biggest fans! We are looking forward to seeing you perform live again in the near future.
Gordon Loomer, Austin, TX, KEOS Radio Listener

About the THF Performance for the Wimberley Concert Association at Chapel in the Hills, Wimberley, TX

Original and refreshing. These ladies, a capella most of the way, break new ground with their own compositions, tight harmony and interesting messages.
Bill Hull, Concert Promoter, Wimberley, TX

Texas Hot Flash sizzles with surprising harmonies. This perfect blend of women’s voices will raise the hair on your arms in excitement, whether singing about letting go and moving on or the demise of the Great Whale. Their repertoire moves through singer-songwriter originals to brand new arrangements of old chart toppers.

Caught your show at the Chapel last night and it was AWESOME! Inspired me, that's for sure. You ladies are wonderful performers, with harmonies that just made me weak. And your choices of songs were equally inspirational and entertaining.
Teresa Kenas, San Marcos, TX

About the THF Performance at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, Altadena, CA

Creatively swimming upstream, TEXAS HOT FLASH, catches the attention of folk club audiences by starting their show singing some of the old pre-war pop standards much to the delight of all. Not to be satisfied with chestnuts, no matter how well roasted and flavored, they then launch into well chosen folk music and tunes with a Western beat showing their full range of voices mostly without help from instruments. Singing without an instrumental net in rooms that expect an orchestra of rural strings is always a brave thing to do but these three strong women have the talent and the skill to pull it off and thrill the multitudes.

They build their show from laid back introduction pieces to strong up beat selections always building the tension, the humor, wit and the sound.
A triple delight....TEXAS HOT FLASH.
Bob Stane, The Coffee Gallery Backstage, Altadena/Pasadena, California

Brenda Freed and Hot Flash charmed the sox off the Belton Acoustic Concert goers. About the THF Performances in the Campground at the Kerrville Folk Festival

Texas Hot Flash take the barber shop out into the yard and make it swing. This trio of women singers bring a whole new meaning to close harmony. Totally contemporary they rely on the most ancient of instruments, the human voice. Led by singer, song writer Brenda Freed you get the feeling that this new Texas phenomenon would be equally at home in your back yard or the Royal Albert Hall in London. If you get a chance catch them and if you can't catch them, book them.
John Row, Poet/Storyteller from England, heard THF at Kerrville Folk Festival

About THF Performance on KUT Radio, Austin, TX

About the THF Demo CD

" I love a cappella groups and I've heard some good ones. For me, the writing must be solid, and the performance must be entertaining without being cut after cut of "look what we can do". From time to time, some mind-blowing chords are in order, but it must be used tastefully and sparingly. Texas Hot Flash brings a great mix on "AN EXPERIENCE", a six cut preview EP that employs several styles to culminate in an entertaining, yet awe-inspiring performance.

" Sweet Texas Waltz" has the only instrument, and frankly, the song would have been just as good without it. "One Day" is the group's show-off tune, and they bring time signature changes and augmented minors every bit as spine-tingling as groups like Take 6 (who happen to be my all-time favorites). Each cut has a different lean, and at times, there's a war-era feel with blends that rival the Andrews Sisters. I did some research to see how close this sound was to the Lennon Sisters, and I reminded myself that the Lennon's were the belles of the Lawrence Welk era from '55 to '67. That music and this music is very different. This is refreshing, less symphonic, and more enjoyable. Get this disc.
It's about 18 minutes from start to finish, and truly worth a buck a minute, but you can get it for only $6.99!" (price still undecided, of course!)

Brenda Freed

Fans on Smilin' Inside:

I'm very impressed with your " Sort It Out " CD Brenda, & count on plenty of airtime on my shows. Good lyrics, melodies, vocals, production & Val's outstanding guitar. A "Radio Friendly " package is my opinion & if you wanna get it out there send to the following. All I ask is that you use my ref which will help you & helps me keep the pipelines flowing... Thanks for the kind words & good news that you're mailing out. And sure add me to your e-mail updates list as I enjoy keeping up with what folks are doing. Placed " Sparks Fly " on an Ireland show this morning thanks for sending your "Until Daylight " CD Brenda. Glad you did as I heard several goodies in there, including 7 / 9 as I like swing jazzy music. & what a way to close on the so cool 12. PS....Tell Val I think he's a fine musician too as well as producer. Thanks so much Brenda. I really appreciate it, continued happy spring. - Eddie Russell, DJ in Columbus TEXAS

Yes, yes, yes to your new CD!  It is great and sounds wonderful!  I like the wide variety of styles--you always do that so well.  I like the first cut a lot. - Joey Walker, Iowa City, IA

Other Fan Mail:

Congratulations on your radio performance.  I heard you on KUT last night.  You did great.  I really enjoyed hearing your music. - Bud, Round Rock, TX

I decided to go see a movie late last night, jumped in my rig, and WOW, some great, folksy lady w/ harmonica backup was coming over the air on KUT.  Who might this be?!  Well, o'course, it was YOU!  I was able to listen for about 15 minutes, not near long enough, and it was wonderful - thank you!  You came across real well and your back-up band was excellent, as were your vocals and harp.  Keep at it, you've got a growing audience, I'm sure. - Tom Stevens, Austin, TX

At our concert series, and again at the Salado Art Festival, Brenda Freed and Val Roessling turned in crowd-pleasing performances. Brenda has an exuberant, energetic stage presence, engaging songs and a clear, soulful voice. Val is a guitar master with a quiet, easy-going grace of his own. Together, they're dynamite fun. - Bill James, Concert Promoter

Dear Brenda, thank you for the e-mail. I was on your promising web page and heard the song "Texas country blues" of your first CD. Such good music always is welcomed for my radio show here in Germany. I'm looking expectantly for the packet. - Gerd Stassen, Germany

Dear Brenda, just got your packet with info and the CD's "Until Daylight" and "Sort It Out". Thank you very much. The music reminds me of a concert of Parsons Green. The group members were Gene Parsons, Meridian Green, Beppe Gambetta, Paolo Bonfanti and L.Ventriglia. My favorite songs of "Until Daylight" are "Texas Hill Country Blues, "Tattoo", "He said, she said" and "Walk upon the Land". The favorites of "Sort It Out" are the title song, "I'll be damned", "Ships", "Wish I may", "Trouble" and "I gotta get over you". There's so much good stuff, it's not easy to get the right songs for a radio show. But I think, it will be "Texas Hill Country Blues" in April and the great "Ships" in April/May.
I'll keep you informed.
Best Wishes from Germany, - Gerd Stassen, Germany

We think y'all's CD is absolutely terrific! Your voice is an inspiration. We were able to play it on our new sound system, replete with Bose speakers! You should be invited by SXSW to be the Honored Band at their opening convention next year. Y'all should be signed as the Texas Band of the Year by the biggest label in the world. The vocals and instrumentation on the entire CD are phenomenal. - Glen Alyn Austin, TX

Where: CAMP C*A*L*M* at the Kerrville Folk Festival '99
Music and treasured memories are abundant at the Kerrville Folk Festival, but often times certain things stand out. The most fun I experienced at one of these annual celebrations was when Brenda Freed & Val Roessling strolled into our camp (Camp C*A*L*M), guitars strung over their shoulders, and proceeded to soothe the savage beasts. Rather than "C*A*L*M" us down, however, Brenda whipped us all into a wild & spirited time. It was the most memorable performance that I had seen that entire 18-day event. (But that isn't all... Immediately afterward, we discovered that on everyone's watch there was an unaccounted-for nine-minute gap. Someone who wandered in then pointed out to us that none of us was speaking English... for some reason we were all communicating with each other - rather fluently - in what turned out to be Ancient Mandarin. Conversation quickly revealed that every participant had also suddenly become extremely proficient in both Quantum Mechanics and various specialized areas of Robotics Repair under zero-gravity conditions! After that, we got inconclusive results upon examination of the chipsets we found implanted in our navels. It was... totally cosmic.) - Jim Dale Houston, TX

BRENDA FREED HAS ONE OF THE COOLEST WEBSITES ON THE NET!
(Of course, there is a great picture of Tim there too!)
Be sure to check out the schedule! - Pam Harden San Antonio, TX

Val, I just heard a cut on the radio on the way home and almost had a wreck. If I would have had a wreck, I would have had to have waited until the song was over before I checked to see if everyone was OK. Where the hell did you come up with the tones? Just about the time I think that I've heard all of your licks, you pull some new stuff out of the bag! What's up with that? Val Roessling... The Tone Doctor... Yeah, I think I like it! - Scott Stephens Castroville, TX

It's hard to believe that it's been nearly two months since we heard you on your Iowa tour -- a great time with great music. The evening went too quickly. We have listened to your CD often. Two weeks ago on our way to the Bluesfest in Duluth it provided a wonderful alternative to radio fare. We look forward to seeing you on your next northern tour. - Gary & Loretta Dayton, IA

Hi,Y'all! The new CD is great work. Really enjoyed hearing about your trip and the pub brew y'all enjoyed. As always, look forward to seeing you again soon. Keep me posted where and when.
P.S. Great website too! - Jim (The Oak Hill Music Critic)

Sounds like you had a great trip and thanks so much for sharing with us! What a wonderful experience! Sounds like you are finding a lot to do at home as well! We love to tell folks about this great young friend we have that is starting to do so well in the music world. Pretty soon we will be able to say--"we knew Brenda when". - Vern & NL Galveston, TX

What a surprise...What a delight!
Linda and I normally have coffee/buy and read paper each Sunday morning between 9:30 and 10:00. (we play in orchestra, run sound at church-go to Borders between 'practice' and actual church)... for some reason we missed that time, so we came at about 4:45...WHAT A SURPRISE!...enjoyed it tremendously! - Gary & Linda Tulsa, OK

I'm glad your music career is going so well. You are both very talented and I hope good things come your way. - Brad Austin, TX

Hi there! Wanted to let you know how much my friends and I enjoyed catching your act at Java Joe's in Des Moines. Glad we got there early enough to get a good seat! As always, it is a treat to hear you. Thanks too for keeping me on your mailing list. And, hey... I purchased your new CD and it's GGGRRRREAT! - Jan Des Moines, IA

I miss you. Can't wait for you to be back. I was just reading your England schedule & getting jealous. Ahhhh, the wonderful life of a rock 'n' roll star! Love the website!
Love you guys XXX OOO XXX - Thomas & Betsy Wimberley, TX

I took a look and, Val and Brenda, I liked what I saw. Surely wish I could be in the shadows during the Freed British Tour! Web page looks terrific. I'll check out your domain around the end of this week. - Bess Austin, TX

It's been fun listening & singing along to your CD. I like all of the tunes. You have such an ability to get across the ballads as you do the blues. The balance of the fast verses and the slower rhythms seems to come out too. Your voice sounds real pretty on JB Braden's song, Ships. He must really be pleased to have you cover it. I like the way you & Bob Clark co-write. I don't know if I know who he is. Center of the Road might be my fav. but it's a hard toss up between some others. You just can't beat the way you sing a capella! - Marilisa, San Marcos, TX
